The Levels Dialogue Box

The left (black), middle (gray) and right (white) sliders under the histogram and the eyedroppers are used to set the black, gray and white set points for the image.
Bringing the outside slides closer together increases the contrast. Sliding the middle gray slider lightens or darkens the mid tonesin the image without affecting the black and white points in the image.
