Procedure for using layer masks

Add a layer mask to the new waterfall layer by clicking on the second icon from the left bottom on the Layers Palette. Activate the mask by clicking on its thumbnail image on the layer. Title bar of the image will say layer mask.
To temporarily make a portion of the layer transparent, just paint on the mask with black. To reveal a transparent portion of the layer, just paint onto the layer mask with white.
